In this workshop, we’re hand-building a reusable clay keep cup — a practical piece that’s perfect for your coffee, tea or cold drinks.
This is a great project for beginners looking to develop their hand-building skills while creating something both functional and artistic.
You’ll start by preparing and rolling your clay into an even slab before using a simple template to cut out the main body of your cup. We’ll look at how to achieve a consistent thickness and how to work with the clay carefully to avoid cracks, air bubbles and uneven edges.
From there, you’ll learn how to shape your slab into a cylinder, creating a strong seam by scoring, slipping and joining the edges securely. We’ll then make and attach the base, focusing on creating strong joins and smoothing both the inside and outside of your piece.
Finally, we’ll refine the surface, compress and round the rim, and explore simple finishing details such as adding a drinking hole or straw slot.
This workshop is perfect for beginners and is a great way to practise fundamental slab-building techniques while creating something you can actually use.
