In this workshop, we’re creating sculptural ceramic vases using a hybrid coil and slab-building technique.
We’ll begin with a compressed slab base and build upwards using flattened slab coils, allowing you to create height quickly while maintaining even wall thickness and structural integrity.
You’ll learn how the size and shape of your base influences the overall form, and how to train the clay outward and inward to create movement, curves and expressive silhouettes. We’ll also look at how to properly score, slip and reinforce joins so your piece stays strong and stable as it grows.
From there, we’ll explore different shaping techniques to create everything from subtle, organic forms to more dramatic curves, spouts and expressive rims. The aim is to give you the confidence to move beyond traditional symmetrical vessels and let the clay guide the shape of your piece.
We’ll also look at surface refinement and decoration, using rib tools to create either a textured sculptural finish or a smoother, more wheel-thrown appearance. You can then experiment with carving, scooping, found textures, expressive rims and even a sculptural handle to give your vase its own personality.
This workshop is all about understanding structure while giving yourself the freedom to experiment. Your vase might begin as a simple coil-and-slab build, but through shaping, smoothing and decoration, it becomes something completely unique.
