In this workshop, we’re exploring how to transform the rim of your wheel-thrown pieces using a range of simple, high-impact rim manipulation techniques.

The rim is often one of the first things you notice about a piece, and it can completely change both the look and functionality of your work. Rather than aiming for perfectly symmetrical tops every time, you’ll learn how to shape your rims with intention and give your pieces more personality.

We’ll start with the basics, including how to clean up uneven rims and manage moisture so your clay is firm enough to hold its new shape. From there, we’ll explore practical rim folds that can become utensil rests and chopstick holders, as well as scalloped and fluted edges that add movement to bowls and can help disguise wonky rims.

You’ll also learn different finishing options, including rounded rims and clean, flat rims, and how each choice affects the final appearance and feel of your piece.

Function is a big part of this workshop too. We’ll look at how to create functional pouring spouts, understanding how liquid travels and why a sharp lip can help reduce drips. You’ll also explore rolled and folded rims for traditional plant-pot forms, comfortable drinking rims for cups and even a simple pouring handle that can be created directly from the rim.

This workshop is all about experimentation and learning to see the rim as an opportunity rather than an afterthought. By trying different techniques across multiple pieces, you’ll gain more confidence in manipulating the top of your forms and adding character without making the process complicated.
