Olive Platters

In this workshop, we’re creating one of the most fun and functional pieces in pottery right now — the olive platter.

This is an approachable hand-building project that’s suitable for all skill levels, whether you’re completely new to clay or looking to refine your hand-building techniques. You’ll learn two different ways to create your platter, giving you the freedom to choose the method and finish that best suits your style.

We’ll start with a single coil method, using one large coil to create a loose, organic spiral shape. You’ll learn how to roll your coil evenly, shape the curves and create a continuous channel through the centre of the piece.

We’ll also explore a three-coil method, using a base coil and two additional wall coils for a more structured approach. You’ll learn how to score, slip, join and compress your coils to create a strong, consistent form.

Throughout the workshop, we’ll focus on form, flow and function, as well as how to prevent cracking, strengthen weak areas and refine the shape without overworking the clay.

The result is a unique, functional piece that’s perfect for serving olives, snacks or whatever else you fancy. And because there’s no single perfect outcome, you can experiment with the shape and make it completely your own.
